What is a TMJ Disorder?
The TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is the joint connecting your lower jaw to your head. The term “TMJ” is used to refer to TMJ disorders, or TMD, a condition which develops when this joint becomes misaligned, stressed or injured in some way. Common signs of TMJ disorders include:
- Grinding, clicking or popping sounds when moving your jaw
- An inability to open your mouth widely to eat, speak or yawn
- A locked or “stuck” jaw
- Pain when chewing and biting
- Pain in your neck, shoulders, jaw or ears
- Frequent headaches
