What is a TMJ Disorder?

The TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is the joint connecting your lower jaw to your head. The term “TMJ” is used to refer to TMJ disorders, or TMD, a condition which develops when this joint becomes misaligned, stressed or injured in some way. There are several factors which contribute to TMJ disorders, including stress, teeth grinding and clenching, arthritis in the jaw joint and trauma or injury to the head, neck and jaw.

Common signs of TMJ disorders include:

  • Grinding, clicking or popping sounds when moving your jaw
  • An inability to open your mouth widely to eat, speak or yawn
  • A locked or “stuck” jaw
  • Pain when chewing and biting
  • Pain in your neck, shoulders, jaw or ears
  • Frequent headaches
