Managing Dental Anxiety

Visiting the dentist is not anyone’s favorite thing to do. Dr. Stephen M. Taylor, Dr. Jim O. Taylor, Dr. William Reed and our team understand that many people experience anxiety or fear when visiting the dentist, and we make every effort to relieve these fears and worries so that you and your family can feel comfortable and receive treatment with ease.

Dental anxiety and fear manifest in a variety of ways, from mild feelings of worry and stress to specific and debilitating fears about upcoming procedures. If you suffer from dental anxiety or fear, please speak with our dentists and team. We are happy to work with you to create strategies and take precautions that will help you feel more comfortable.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a mild form of dental sedation, and is commonly referred to as “laughing gas.” It is a great option for patients of all ages and works quickly to help you feel calm and at ease while receiving treatment. Before providing this type of sedation, our dentists will meet with you to discuss your treatment, medical history and potential fears with you to determine if nitrous oxide is right for you.

When you receive nitrous oxide, our dentists will fit you with a small nose mask. As you breathe normally and inhale through the mask, the nitrous oxide will help you feel calmer and more relaxed. You may experience a “floating” or euphoric sensation. After your treatment is complete, we will remove the nose mask and the effects of the gas will wear off quickly, allowing you to safely and legally drive yourself home.
